I am a software engineer working in the wireless area. I have developed software for a IS-136 phone (DAMPS). I have looked at the WAP spec and think it is very flexible. They have used a layered approach and support a broad range of air interfaces including pagers (IS-136, GSM, CDMA, iDen, FLEX). This competitor seems to work using SMS only.

Phone.com was also very smart by leveraging the WWW specs and existing infrastructure.
My biggest concern is the fact that there will be smaller and smaller chips and that this tech might eventually be replaced by a PDA type device.

Soon GPRS and EDGE will allow 365Kbit/s to Mbit/s, this will allow multimedia to be sent to phones.

I think the deciding factor will be cost vs. function.
Most people may not want to spend $400 or so on a PDA and rather use a free mobile phone.

However, the infrastructure that phone.com is building will be used no matter what the device so I think this is probably a winner. I hope it takes a little dip because I think I will take a small position.

Good luck
