My experience is that, here in the U.S., "the word" always gets out, in some way, somewhere, to someone. But as it spreads it becomes distorted - sometimes very badly. Sometimes an old discussion that is now thoroughly dead and buried will suddenly pop up on the rumor mill.

For instance, those "suits" could have been anyone...but they were seen as possible acquirers since the rumor mill was tuned in to that possibility. Personally, I expect that they were really insurance salesmen or "state lubrication tax auditors" - I've had visitors like that and then have been asked..."are the rumors true?"

On the other hand, several years ago I did an acquisition in the UK which attracted absolutely no attention until we announced it. Culturally, they were simply not tuned into the implications...
