I hate "renter grade" carpet, especially when it gets ugly. We used to vacuum, and shampoo, the one here, and finally I said, no more, we ripped it up, and refinished the wooden floors underneath. This was over Chris's dead body, but I am stubborner than he is. It looks much better.

I went to Home Depot, and got lucky with some genuine wool Oriental rugs, not great quality, but nice enough, and very inexpensive, one was $250 and one was $450, room size. Those can cover a multitude of woes, much cheaper than recarpeting.
