Mark,

<< Smart Card to make secure transactions with GSM mobile phones >>

The interesting part of this is that the new Motorola StarTACTM D phone is the first integrated dual slot phone that enables the service provider to accept third party Smart Cards carried by a consumer in his wallet (a Visa Card or MasterCard transaction card) for example in conjunction with the SIM card that is a component of every GSM phone.

Applications will allow access to a variety of credit, debit, and stored value cash loading (electronic purse) services such as mobile electronic ATM facilities, remote ticketing, prepaid mobile communications and secure on-line payment.

The mobile becomes a personal transaction terminal that supplements services traditionally transacted at point of sale terminals or ATM's. This is, IMO, a potential Killer App in the US.

In the UK Barclays Bank has been evolving this utilization of the mobile since 1994, first with Mercury one2one and more recently with Cellnet.

>> Cellnet/Barclaycard Partnership

Cellnet and Barclaycard have worked together since 1995 to provide their customers with a unique range of mobile phone banking services and cheaper mobile calls.

At launch Barclaycard/Cellnet customers were able to get 24-hour access to statement enquiries, credit limit increases and payment of bills.

Since 1997, following major technological advances, customers have been able to view Barclaycard and Barclays Bank account details like mini-statements, credit card limits, balances and next payment dates on their mobile phone display. These services and benefits are available over customised handsets available from Barclaycard. <<
