News...Hell's Angels Involvement? Starnet warrant reveals early Robinson link
Monday Aug 23 1999
by Brent Mudry
Perhaps the most interesting name to pop up in court documents for the search warrant of Starnet Communications International is that of Lloyd Robinson, a significant member of the Hell's Angels in British Columbia, the controversial motorcycle club's Canadian stronghold. Mr. Robinson was a partner with Ken Lelek in That's Entertainment, a Starnet affiliate then serving as a stripper agency, until 1995. The next year, Mr. Robinson and a fellow member of the Angels' powerhouse Angel East End chapter were arrested in an extortion probe, but the charges were stayed within six weeks. The unprecedented raid on Starnet's premises, one of the biggest police raids on a legitimate business in Vancouver's history, was led by the Coordinated Law Enforcement Unit, an agency which has been monitoring and probing the Angels' affairs for years. While Mr. Robinson has been officially off the That's Entertainment scene for several years, the company and Mr. Lelek maintain strong ties to Starnet. The search warrant documents note that as of Feb. 16, That's Entertainment had an Internet Web site, named www.thatsent.com, located at the Internet protocol address of 209.17.130.52, which is within the block of IP addresses registered to Starnet. In addition, this site had a link to a Starnet-licensed Internet casino, Casino of the Kings at www.i-casino.com.
Mr. Lelek's association with Starnet appears to be at a high level. As part of their 18-month Starnet probe, RCMP and CLEU officers assisted local garbagemen in picking up the curbside trash outside the residences of several Starnet players. A bag of garbage picked up Feb. 26 from Starnet president Paul Giles' house was quite helpful for the police. Discarded documents showed that Starnet held a board meeting on Dec. 3, 1998, and copies of the minutes were forwarded to Mr. Lelek and Mr. Giles. The trash also revealed that an agenda for a Feb. 8 board meeting was sent to Starnet officials Mark Dohlen, Mr. Giles, Chris Zacharias, Jason King and Jack Carley, while a memo changing the data to Feb. 5 was sent Mr. Zacharias, a Starnet director, to this full list as well as to Mr. Lelek. A March 4 pickup of Mr. Lelek's garbage yielded a number of business cards with the Internet address of www.bigbet.com, another casino licensee of Starnet. A utility program search revealed that www.bigbet.com's registrant is That's Acting, at 705 - 1045 Howe St., the same address used for That's Entertainment dating back to its Robinson days. While www.bigbet.com was ostensibly a Starnet licensee, the Web site's administration and billing contact is Mr. Lelek, at e-mail ken@starnetc.ca. Servers to this Web site were registered at NS1.Starnetc.com and NS2Starnet.com.
While search warrant documents note no continuing association between Mr. Lelek and Mr. Robinson, the pair's That's Entertainment was noted in a Vancouver Sun feature on the Angels' business empire as a significant operation of the East End Chapter. On April 18, 1996, 13 months after the article, Mr. Robinson and East End associate Gino Zumpano were arrested and charged with extortion, allegedly related to millions of dollars in real estate. Six weeks later, in late May, the charges were stayed by Crown counsel who decided, after reviewing the case, that it lacked the substantial likelihood for a conviction.
Vancouver Sun reporter Neal Hall noted that while Mr. Zumpano was arrested without incident as he exited the East End Chapter's clubhouse, Mr. Robinson was arrested at gunpoint on the Upper Levels Highway, while he was driving, in a takedown which involved members of the heavily-armed emergency response team. The Sun noted that the West Vancouver businessman was unarmed but carrying a large quantity of cash in his car. Mr. Robinson's stock market experience includes a stint as employee and major shareholder of Genesis Resources, listed on the Vancouver Stock Exchange. Mr. Hall also noted that Mr. Robinson was a friend and one-time business associate of stockbroker turned offshore lottery seller Ray Ginnetti, who was found in his West Vancouver home in 1990, with a single bullet to the back of his head.
Gambling Magazine will publish tomorrow some exclusive e-mails from Ken Lelek sent from Starnet. Many very reliable sources inside Starnet confirmed that Ken Lelek is Starnet's biggest stockholder. He also own a boat with Paul Giles and had or still has his office at Starnet. |
