We spread visqueen in the corner, and put newspaper on top, but it soaked through anyway before the kitties were old enough to give away. Then we shampooed the rug repeatedly, and replaced the padding, but it's really impossible to get the smell out. And underneath, it had turned the wood floor black. So it was either replace all the carpet, or refinish the floor. Refinishing was actually cheaper, and it looks nicer.
