You were right that within a layer, say between parallel traces, the closer spacing of traces counteracts the shorter length. But between layers, the distance may be the same and therefore both the narrower traces and reduced length should reduce capacitance.

I'd still be interested to hear whether any significant currents are induced by EMF and the significance of self inductance w.r.t. 0.6 to 1GHz signals.
