Isro to put hi-tech remote sensing satellite in orbit in 2000

THE Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) will launch its technologically-advanced remote-sensing satellite, with a resolution of 2.5 metres, in 2000. This satellite will help the country avoid Kargil-like situations. It will also help develop precise base maps which could be used for better utility management, planning and environment.
This was disclosed by Dr K Kasturirangan, chairman, Isro. Information infrastructure has become an essential element in the development of any country, he observed. "These infrastructure-based databases, containing both spatial and non-spatial data linked through keys and indexes, can help to integrate the country as well as the world," said Mr Kasturirangan. He was delivering the keynote address at the three-day geographic information technology conference ? Map India ? organised by Isro and the Centre for Spatial Database Management Solutions.
Sudhir Jalan, president, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry said industry relies on expert knowledge to undertake projects which translate theories with potential into realities. "Past trends would indicate that countries and states having a vast mineral resource base are not amongst the fastest and most developed in the world. Only those countries which have used these resources have shown better development," he added. |
