The quote said "Intel architecture" not "Intel architectures". But the key to understanding the significance of the article may be in the following quote:

<Microsoft's move to back away from Alpha throws into question the extent to which Microsoft will push the scalability envelope in the future.>

Microsoft stayed with Alpha EV6 because they felt that the P6 bus was scaling very poorly for SMP. Now Microsoft has the best of both worlds: Intel architecture (Athlon) and a scalable SMP bus (EV6).
