True, but compare their comments this time to after the June increase. This month's language sounds like a definite signal that unless something complete unexpected happens, they are done for the year (at least on the up side).

Two other points to consider. When Greenspan cut rates 50 bp last October, he did so in the face of an emergency. I am certain he and the "old timers" (those that believe in the Phillips Curve) were itching for the opportunity to take that cut back.

Two, if they need to cut rates to alleviate any Y2K liquidity problems come November/December, I am certain they would feel more comfortable doing so from 5 1/4 rather than from less.

All IMHO.
