Tuesday August 24, 9:43 pm Eastern Time Matsushita, Toshiba, Sandisk to develop new memory TOKYO, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd said on Wednesday it, Toshiba Corp and major U.S. memory card maker Sandisk Corp (Nasdaq:SNDK - news) reached a basic agreement to jointly develop next generation memory card device. They will hold a news conference at 4:00 p.m. (0700 GMT) in Tokyo. Matsushita President Yoichi Morishita, Toshiba President Taizo Nishimuro and Sandisk Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President Eli Harari will attend the news conference, a Matsushita spokesman said. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun financial daily reported on Wednesday the three companies will jointly develop an advanced compact memory card for use in portable devices, which protects copyrights in the online distribution of audio and image data, and will start marketing the new compact card individually as early as the beginning of 2000. Sandisk's compact flash memory card is popular worldwide for use in digital cameras, personal digital assitants (PDAs) and palm-top notebook personal computers.
