I would be willing to bet COBOL and FORTRAN will have lives well into the next century. I started programming in 1981 and I HATED COBOL and I always predicted its doom (good thing I didn't have any money then to bet)!

I don't know how old you are Rod, but all the JAVA promises were said and made about ADA (and it had the blessing of the DOD). Well, I decided to skip ADA and stick with C and learn C++.

Any way, C++ isn't going anywhere for quite a while. If JAVA is your tool of preference, use it. There is no perfect language. The best language is the one you are most productive in and earn your living in. Many of us will continue with C++ and the 36% tax bracket.
