Wingspan may spend $100 million on advertising:

interactive.wsj.com

WSJ front-page article (for those who have WSJ Interactive access)

"Whereas pioneer Net.Bank Inc. (www.netbank.com), based in Atlanta, spent just $1.2 million on marketing in the first six months of this year, Bank One plans to spend $150 million on Wingspan in its first 12 months. Outsiders expect it to pour close to $100 million of this into a coast-to-coast ad blitz that includes pop-up adds all over the Internet. (Wingspan won't comment on the estimate.)"

The article quotes one analyst as projecting that Wingspan will have 500,000 customers by the end of the year.

"Wingspan has signed up about 75,000 ... customers, estimates Goldman Sachs analyst Lori Appelbaum, although she expects the number to rise to 500,000 within a year."

Overall, article expresses some skepticism that 'net banking will take off, noting that customers have to mail in deposits, and use other banks' ATMS to get cash. Toward the end, it says Wingspan may end up setting up a nationwide network of ATMS and maybe even some brick-and-mortar branches.
