Chipmakers to benefit from surging prices
The price of a 64M DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chip has risen above $8 per chip in the international market, nearly double the price quoted a couple of months ago.

The development is expected to boost profits for Korea's semiconductor firms, as they have been hiking the prices of these chips under long-term supply contracts with foreign buyers.

Industry sources said yesterday that the price of an 8M x 8 PC-100 chip, which takes up the largest share of the DRAM chip market, is being quoted at $7.85 to $8.49 per chip on the spot market, averaging $8.17 per chip and surpassing the $8 level for the first time in three months.

The price is nearly double the $4.60 per chip quoted around the end of June.

The prices of other DRAM chips have also increased, including the 4M x 16 synchronous DRAM and the 8M x 8 synchronous chip, which rose about 10 percent in the past month.

Domestic chipmakers like Hyundai Electronics, Samsung Electronics and Hyundai MicroElectronic (formerly LG Semicon) raised the prices of their DRAM chips under long-term supply contracts by 10 percent at the end of last month and did it again for the second time recently.

Since they have held another round of negotiations with their long-term customers, it is likely that the prices will rise again towards the end of this month or early next month.
