At the risk of being sanctioned by Justa, I will comment. According to the piece you cited, the FBI now admits that hours before the fire, they did fire some tear gas canisters they could in theory have caused a fire. They clearly didn't start the fire, however, and thus I don't see the relevance. As you probably know, fire started simultaneously in all parts of the complex as the Davidians brought to culmination their long-held plans for a mass suicide.

As a Libertarian, I believe that the primary (sole) function of government is to maintain law and order. Thus I have no problem with the FBI enforcing the law. I do not believe that the government has any obligation to prevent mass suicides. They gave the Davidians more than ample time to leave, but the Davidians had no intention to do so because they believed that the way to heaven was through mass suicide.

Frankly I don't know why people today assume that the government is responsible for all that is good and all that is bad, that if we have a problem it is government that should solve it, and that government even has an obligation to protect us from ourselves.

Justa, I'm sorry. I promise I will slap my fingers if they try to continue this debate.

Carl
