Loring,

You are forgetting one main factor that the Linux Evangelist has also forgotten. NetWare has not lost any real significant marketshare to any Unix derivative (specially Linux). Any lost marketshare has mostly been attributed to its marketshare battle with NT.

Reasons for that...

1) Linux & most other Unix flavors are not considered viable File/Print "office automation" class servers. They are still to cryptic and too non-friendly to serve that purpose. As time goes on and this issue get addressed, some marketshare of NetWare might fall to Unix, but this is currently not the biggest threat to NetWare.

2) The Unix flavours and specially Linux can best fight against NT for marketshare more so than NetWare. Why, because Unix and NT share one vary common fundamental - they are both deemed to be "General Purpose" OSes. NetWare IS NOT a general purpose OS and therefor its substantial performance and security advantages over either of these other OSes gives it an edge in holding back the Linux erosion of the NetWare marketshare.

3) Related to the last point, I think that NOVL will start showing more and more examples of how it will use its Special NOS design OS features to provide technical advantages over the other General Purpose OSes. Perfect current example is the ICS appliance and firewalling service on NetWare. There is absolutely no way NT or even Linux can perform close to ICS/NetWare in speed capacity on this arena! I believe that NOVL will demonstrate more of these examples of NetWare leveraging in the near future.

SO, I would openly dispute that any version of Linux will dethrone or seriously reduce NetWare's current marketshare. The only OS that is currently doing that is NT and that is purely because of the past few years of what I call the "Lemming Factor". I know NT is an inferior product but I must give it a shot because the media tells me the industry is going that way.

I also believe that with MSFT's recent and numerous marketing and delivery mistakes (multi-year delays on NT5, a soon to be proven immature Active Directory, being shackled from performing anti-trust violations, and its shuffling feet attitude to accept and build open-standard systems) has dramatically watered down the "Lemming Factor" that they so successfully built for themselves.

I dont think you will see any more serious erosion of the NetWare platform Loring. It has already shown to be stabilizing and I would even predict that NetWare marketshare will creep slowly upward if NOVL successfully executes on its drive to the Internet space. And we have all seen that NOVL - with Eric Schmidt at the helm - has been flawlessly executing its drive for the Internet space and its comeback.

I now stand off my soapbox.
