A diacritical mark is a mark added to a letter to show how it is pronounced, like an umlaut, or a breve.

My little Webster's defines diphthong as "a complex sound made by gliding continuously from the position for one vowel to that of another within the same syllable," and gives, as examples of words with diphthongs, house and coil.

Now, I don't know about you, but when I say "shit," it's clearly one syllable, likewise "house" and "coil." But when I try to speak redneck, shit definitely has two syllables, and even three if I am expressing incredulity.
