hey duff,

i had a similar problem, except it was continually scanning via norton software. i tried a number of things and what finally stopped the restarting was this solution:

"The AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file is
loading variables that interfere with some 16-bit programs
Follow these steps to rename the CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT files:

1. Click the Start button, and choose Shut Down.
2. Select "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode" and click
OK.
3. At the DOS prompt, type:

CD\ [Enter]
REN CONFIG.SYS CONFIG.ABC [Enter]
REN AUTOEXEC.BAT AUTOEXEC.ABC [Enter]

4. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the computer."

after making the above adjustment on my other machine, there have been no problems, including anything possibly related to the change i made. i was ready to put it right back if it messed anything else up. so i feel confident suggesting this remedy to you. it came from the symantec knowledge base.

as wily says, usual disclaimer. <g3>

let me know if it worked. you can also try going to this site:
