This concept has been discussed quite a bit in the industry. External devices such as CD-ROMs and floppy disks impose packaging constraints and internal costs. The move is to modular systems using USB and firewire. The base package has what it takes to boot and do the basic job.

The modular nature also makes it easier to configure these systems since the USB and firewire are plug and play. Also investment is protected. Floppies, CD-ROM, and even hard disks can migrate from one system to another as easily as you unplug a telephone and plug it in elsewhere in the house.

ISA support will be virtually eliminated by next year. Any reference to ISA ports is clearly a misprint or error on the part of the author.
