NT 4.0 won't hurt Intel.

16 and 32 bit NT (windows) software applications are not binary compatible across platforms. Hence, a company can't buy an Alpha based NT workstation and run all of its old legacy applications much faster on it.

Worse yet, many new 32 bit windows applications are sold for Intel machines only. Hence, if you buy an Alpha machine there is no guarantee future applications will be compiled to run on it.

Very few companies will take the risk of switching processor families. The performance gains would be minor relative to the productivity loss of losing all their legacy applications. The only places I see it happening are areas like CAD and 3D rendering where only a few software applications are used and speed is absolutely critical. That certainly isn't the mass market, however.

Companies running standard business applications are going to love the Intel + NT 4.0 combination. They get compatibility with nearly all their old apps, the sexy new Win95 interface, compatibility with nearly all future apps, and a rock solid stable OS with superior multitasking capabilities. I think it is a big WIN/WIN for Intel and Microsoft. And since the Pentium Pro really shines under NT it should boost its sales dramatically.

The biggest victim may be Win95 long term. That won't hurt MS, however, as everyone will be transitioning to NT 4.0 when they get the horsepower (Pentium Pro).
