That is one heck of a load for a first semester freshman. My undergrad school didn't even allow freshmen to take 200 level courses. His ambition is admirable, but I think 18 hours is too much until he's been through at least a semester or two of a 15 hour load and experienced the difficulty of that.
I did a joint law/MBA program at Northwestern and had the equivalent of 18 hours a couple of semesters in that program and even though I was a graduate student, it was still damn difficult. And that was after having 6 years of experience in college.
If I were CW, with my hindsight, I'd drop a 3 hour class and kind of ease in and enjoy my first semester of college. Otherwise, you are guaranteed to get a desperation call from him in early December in which he will say he can't handle the pressure and he is ready to quit. I know because I did exactly that my third year of grad school.

Edit. Having read the other encouraging posts in response to your post, I would have to respectfully disagree with them. At least from my personal experience, I thought I had good study habits when I entered college, but I found out pretty quick that I did not know what the hell I was doing. By the time I was in my last year of law school, I could take exams in my sleep and get A's or B's going into exams cold. But as a freshman in undergrad, I was ready to quit after the first round of exams because it was so hard and so different from high school.
Taht said, I have a lot of admiration for CW and I'm confident he is well prepared for the challenges ahead of him. How would he like a little side action of the Northwestern-Rice football game? I think they play each other this year. I'll look at the schedule and get back to you.
