Well, Steven, how to determine exactly what one wants to say is the problem. And the solution has nothing to do with "artificiality" versus "naturalness". Analogies and simplified constructions are "natural" ways of expression. Vernacular speech is full of metaphors and similes, and any explanation proceeds from the known to the unknown, but, if possible, through simplification. In any event, it should be obvious that one can improve upon "naturalness" in writing as in anything else. If you were a golfer, you would take some care to improve your swing; if you were a painter, you would find it expedient to learn how to mix paints and wield a brush; why should writing be any different?
