Dell Computer's Wealthy CEO Says No Plan To Retire
AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Michael Dell, the founder and chief executive of Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news), said Wednesday he had no plans to retire even though, at the age of 34, he was a billionaire many times over.
Dell, speaking to reporters at the Dell DirectConnect conference in Austin, said he was still working because he liked his job as head of the No. 2-ranked personal computer maker, not because he needed the money.
``If I was in it for the money, I certainly could have retired a long time ago,' he said.
Dell was paid $109 million last year, including $105 million in stock options, by the company he founded in his University of Texas dormitory room in 1984. His personal fortune is said to be $15 billion.
Dell said part of what motivates him to keep working is that he enjoyed seeing Round Rock, Texas-based Dell and the computer industry as a whole grow and bring change to society.
``I think we are truly making a contribution to the way our society operates,' he said.
Besides, Dell added, ``It also happens to be a tremendous amount of fun. I have the greatest job in the world.'
When asked how long he intended to run Dell Computer, he said, ``Many years.' ------------------------------------------------------------ Kemble,
