John, as pointed out in other posts, the nature of laser read/write hardware isn't compatible with many hand-held devices. Look at how failure-prone portable CD players are, plus their low tolerance for even mild G-forces. Until they do away with moving parts, FLASH will be the dominant force in robust portable devices. I would expect the new credit-card-sized, gigabyte/terabyte capacity devices to be in direct competition with Iomega-type magnetic storage and to replace VCR tapes and DVDs before they conquer the portable music market. Besides, a 2 year window exists for FLASH to gain market share before the new devices hit the street. Not a near-term threat, as far as I can see. On the other hand, the folks at Iomega may need to do a bit of R&D to ensure that they don't get trampled in the future. JMHO.
