Dan3:
What it means is that VIA's Apollo Pro 133/PC133 is not faster than Intel's BX/PC100 combination. Don't you think that Intel could have come up with update to BX chipset and faster RAM than PC100 in the last two years? Sure they could done it and gotten a review just like the one you read. Intel's initial effort is the 820 chipset with RDRAM similar to the Pentium 60 MHz microprocessor about 5 years back. Intel is dam good at refining an first release product and maximize it's potential to the fullest.
Do you think that 820 chipset with existing 500 to 600 MHz small cache size microprocessors is the real test of RDRAM's capabilities? Intel will be steamrolling along with 2 RDRAM channels, then 4 RDRAM channels, then as Mr. Tate mentioned in a EBN interview, the RAC interface can be increased form 800 MHz to 1 GHz or higher. I assume as soon as Samsung et al masters 400 MHz production skills, faster RAM core speeds will be possible.
Where does VIA go from here? Overclocked PC133 to PC150 with 2-3% speed increases then the big step to DDR at a VERY LARGE investment in new technology.
