I asked Bruce to elaborate further on APTs technology...
because , by my own admission I do not understand the technology - but I have seen how it works...anyway...this was his reply [with a few corrections in spelling and syntax made by me]:
APT does not currently compete in the 10-print or nail-to-nail "rolled" printarena. APT is focused on high quality full finger, "single-digit" capture devices that are designed to comply with the highest federal standards.
We have spent 5 years developing optical correlation and holographic imaging solutions, getting feedback at major trade shows, and sending out field test units and feel we have designed the better mousetrap for the applications of today and tomorrow.
Specifically, APT's technology utilizes Holographic Optical Elements (HOE's) to eliminate distortion, shorten focal length and reduce product cost while improving image quality. In essence, APT has developed a way to put a hologram on a piece of glass that presents to the camera in the device a "forensic" quality fingerprint much better than one taken with ink, and without alot of expensive lenses or image correction electronics.
The print that comes from APT's single-digit reader is designed to match up directly to existing "legacy" systems that are comprised of ink-based fingerprint records that are scanned in and digitized. Their single-digit live-scan captures 1 inch by 3/4 inch images. The rolled prints are 1 inch by 1 inch, but if you look at fingerprints much, you would see that most of the unique information is contained in the central 1/2 inch.
By developing these high quality readers that can unplug existing devices, match to existing ink-based database records and be made very cost-effectively: APT believes it will capture a large portion of the law enforcement and civil marketplace, and be in position to ride the wave for new commercial applications such as computer security, secured E-Commerce, and Point-of-Sale applications.
hope that helps.
