I do know all too well what Steve means by the discipline of slashing and burning. When I do any professional writing, I find it of great benefit to reread with my blue pencil: It is amazing how repetitive one be, how much more clarity can be achieved using a simple transitional phrase rather a paragraph or two, and how much can be pure "junk" and/or "filler."

I have also discovered that it is often necessary to get a good deal of "junk" out of one's system before the good stuff begins to emerge. I had to throw out three chapters of my master's thesis before I could get a real start on it.
