Actually, the transfer rates for the high speed drives are faster because they really push everything for as much speed as they can get out of it. Lower performance drives are pushing the heads and disks for as much capacity as they can get for good cost per MB. There have actually been times where large OEMs have complained that a desktop drive is too fast, as compared to the other vendors. PC OEMs don't like their customers complaining about variability in benchmarks depending upon which hard drive is installed.
