IN all due respect, yesterday the carriers were talking about ATM as the saviour for the core, then IP, now it's optics. That doesn't mean that there will be no ATM or IP core deployments, it simply means that CSCO (the king of IP) believes that optics is a better solution. And, given the amount of bandwidth we'll need to run multiservice to every nook and cranny of the world it appears that they believe that optics will be required. If JNPR builds routers that are targeted at the core, and LU, NT, and CSCO are buiding optical switches with routing edges then where do you think the industry will go? So, to clarify, I'm not saying that JNPR goes away, I'm saying that at $220/share they are expensive....even in today's market.
Cisco has GSR12000 and next gen products feeding cerent/monterrey
LU has Packetstar, feeding WDM
NT has.. um.... I need to do more homework duh...
And, well, JNPR.... has the M40 and a forthcoming M4000 router.... too little too late??? Maybe, maybe not.
