Limtex, when in satellite mode the handset bounces a signal off the satellite to a Gateway. The effective radius of the GW for this "bounce" to work is about 1500 miles. I saw this figure in an annual report a year or two ago; usually G* is more vague and says something like an area equivalent to "most of W. Europe" or "size of Saudi Arabia."

If you look at Martel's home page, they seem to expect to cover a wider area from one GW. If you look at the siting of GWs in N. America, it's more or less consistent with an effective radius of 1500 miles, IMO.
