You beat me to it. "What's the frequency Kenneth" was indeed what the bad guys asked Mr. Rather at the time of his assault in N.Y.C. If I remember, there was much speculation at the time the it was some secret password for the druggies or something.

Years later, the band REM wrote a song with it as the title; it is the first track on their Monster CD. At the time, REM performed it on Letterman, with Rather as a guest, anyway everyone had a good laugh, including Mr. Rather. (Don't ask what the song means, as Michael Stipes lyrics have always puzzled me. Nice voice though...
