John, Re short sales or any sales.I believe if you elect a tax status as daytrader I believe all trades are to be reported as income and not capital gains as you mentioned earlier....whether short or long... Not 100% sure on the exact ruling but there is a good thread somewhere here on SI...Can't find it right now.Kirby has it.Perhaps do a search under Kirby...... The Osprey
