On a corporate intranet we're okay wrt to security in a thin client model. In an internet setting (where your trying to sell your product) there is a concern for security of information. Your server is accessible from an point on the NET and hence is accessible by hackers; break-in or just IP traffic snoop.

We have implemented inherent security of the Java Servlet model

Any form of encryption will hurt performance for large amounts of data; such as large documents, database queries(!) etc.

I think saving locally is a good idea - I'll follow up with a post on the ideal client model.
