Alexa--

Not to start a whole 'nother argument, but... What on earth are you talking about? "Biological determinism"? Bear in mind that for most of the history of civilization, most women have worked outside the home. Nobody got upset about it because they had "jobs"--chiefly as field workers or domestic servants--not "careers". Middle class women--the wives of shopkeepers and the like--worked alongside their husbands. Some women had businesses of their own, though there were legal obstacles to be overcome; it was also disadvantageous for them that most (though not all) artisan and professional corporations did not allow women to become members.

And don't forget: there was always the Church. Possibly the best route for the truly ambitious woman was to become a nun, and eventually a prioress or abbess. Women in orders, unlike ordinary women, did not require a man's permission to execute a legal act, and so were entirely free to administer their convent's affairs and properties as they saw fit.

The Leave It to Beaver "traditional" family is a phenomenon of this century, and mostly of the Fifties. An aberration, not by any means a norm.

A more personal question: if you really believe what you said, why did you go to law school?
