Business networks are also emerging to allow business-to-business commerce, including Chemdex, a new company on our team's coverage list. Chemdex is one of the first eBusiness vertical networks, set to dramatically improve the efficiency of distributing products for the life sciences industry.

I'm excited about business-to-business commerce but these vertical e-tail plays are really troublesome. This is one reason I don't fully embrace ICGE. It costs too much to gain economies of scale though technology with a vertical product like chemicals, unless Chemdex gets over 50% of the mkt or something. And then theres the commodity goods issue, e-tail is a high-volume commodity goods kind of thing. Chemdex to me is no different than a catalog company that sells a specific product going to the web. The one caviat is maybe chemdex can negotiate with some online purchasing software companies to catalogue their products ... but purchasing in the order cycle over the web isn't happening yet.
