Do you (or does anybody else here) know contemporary Jewish theology? I have been listening to lectures on the Old Testament (if you don't know Tom Rollins's Teaching Company, you should) and Dr. Oden talks about the conflicting views of the covenant; that the northern view was that the covenant with God was conditional -- for example, the covenant was that "if you obey my commandments I will do these things for you" while the southern view was that the covenant was unconditional -- "I will do these things for you without requiring anything specific of you in return." He discusses the OT as a compilation of sources with both viewpoints (which he considers one of the more interesting and enjoyable differences between the OT and most other religious texts which try to be consistent). But since it's an old testament course, he doesn't discuss how the Jews resolved this conflict (if they did). Do you know whether modern Judaism has resolved this conflict, or whether it continues to be a difference within or between the various divisions of Judaism?
