I will not try to persuade you that you should appreciate Picasso better, and it is true that he was somewhat disturbed. Just recall that he was influenced by pre-Columbian, early Iberian, and African art, and trying to explore the worth of easel painting in the face of photography and other graphic technologies, by showing that it still had the greater power to move....As for Matisse, his aspiration, at least by his middle years, was to create an art that was "calm, luminous, and sensual"....
