Thomson, Microsoft Subsidiary Targets European Interactive TV
8/27/99 Building on a year-old agreement, Thomson Multimedia and Microsoft (Redmond, WA) have announced the formation of TAK, a multimedia subsidiary with a focus on developing interactive services.

New products featuring TAK technology are planned for a Q2 2000 launch. The services will be in the form of an embedded TAK module in a wide range of Thomson TV sets, which are sold under the RCA name in the US. TAK services initially will be marketed in France, to be followed rapidly by deployments in other key European markets, Thomson officials said.

Thomson and Microsoft are investing 12 million euros (US $12.5 million) in the venture. Paris-based Thomson Multimedia will hold 70% equity in the company while Microsoft will hold 30%.

The TAK platform is compliant with ATVEF, an HTML-based open specification for interactive programming, and will use Thomson hardware and software for interactive TV jointly with Microsoft?s Microsoft TV platform.
