Jacques - Re: "Shouldn't Intel be a bit nervous about the NT problem also? I would guess they plan to sell more Merceds running NT than Linux."

No - it appears to be a Windows NT problem. The LINUX OS runs OK and chip verification doesn't indicate any problems that would indicate it is a hardware problem.

Realistically, NT - or any other OS - will have lots of time for debug before Merced production - next year.

Re: "What do you hear about seriousness of this problem? Is it an easy fix or something more serious?"

Microsoft is taking it very seriously and is sending in a Swat Team of programmers this week end to Santa Clara to address the problem.

My guess is that the Merced is functional enough that Intel will demonstrate a REAL MERCED SYSTEM running some OS and applications software at the Intel Developer Forum next week.

If Intel demos the MERCED system running LINUX -BUT NOT Win64/NT - that could prove to be very embarrassing for Microsoft.

We all must remember, however, that Microsoft is ALWAYS one to two years late in delivering ANY Operating System upgrades (or bug fixes - you pick your choice of words).

So, Microsoft will be putting on a full court press this week end at Intel's facility to get "something NT" to wiggle at the upcoming developer conference - which is next week, I think.
