Penni--

The notion of the helpful "extended family" is, by most accounts, exaggerated. People didn't live to the ages they do today, so Grandma wasn't always around; your best hope was for an unmarried female sister or aunt. Women, of course, died in childbirth with great frequency, which caused further problems. But there was a pool of domestic laborers that we lack today, and they filled the gaps.

I agree that kids need consistency in caretaking, and in caretakers. But I do know a number of people who were raised almost entirely by servants, and they've turned out just fine. What does real damage is sending children away to boarding school when they're very young; I've known a few of these as adults and they deeply resented not having been allowed to stay at home.

I think there's more than one way to raise children. If you're happy at home, fine; but a mother who doesn't work because she feels it's the Right Thing will no doubt communicate her unhappiness to her kids even if she tries very hard not to.
