Has Globalstar announced plans for a 10,000km constellation like ICO's to fill in the never-to-be-filled areas or will they put gateways on the remote islands with links to GEOs to provide total world coverage?

I suppose people sailing yachts around Easter Island and such remote places could use a direct link to a geostationary satellite as their communications channel rather than build a Globalstar gateway there which would have to transmit via Geo anyway.

When there are 15 million subscribers on Globalstar, then it might be time to have a 10,000km orbit in operation.

Iridium can fill in the gaps for three or four years, then Globalstar can take over. What a huge opportunity Globalstar now has with Iridium in huge trouble, ICO out, Odyssey out, Ellipso out. It's the only big LEO in town. Their market share is going to go from the proposed 15% to about 100%.

The question is, 15% of 30m subscribers or 100% of 200,000?

Time will tell.

Maurice

PS: It does seem silly to be "pushing the providers to ramp up production". I'd have thought a more normal approach is to pay them money for a particular delivery date. Since we have never seen any substantial orders for handsets, we have to assume there are none.
