Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Housemate was not worried. I've been so busy this week. I've had so many appointments that I had not had the time to consider what was wrong. This afternoon I began too worry very, very much.

I phoned the animal hospital. It is likely M was in a cat fight. BUT the area does not look swollen or puffy. The woman I spoke to said it can take several days or more for an abscess to develop. The abscess develops just like you said, from the inside out, and cats have a lot of bacteria in their mouth.

We have to call back in the morning. They can probably squeeze us in. If not, we have an appointment on Monday, but if he takes a turn for the worse it is an emergency hospital.

Mites are not a problem here. And the hospital is only 30 + blocks away, so I assume they know what they are talking about.

I am so glad I asked you. I had no idea because we never let him outside. He can open the door if it is not closed tightly. A cat fight would explain the slugs that we found on his coat. It is a good thing he has his claws.

He is a fastidious cat. The vets have commented on how well Mephisto grooms himself. So, it was impossible for us to notice whether he paid special attention to a particular area of his body.

I should have mentioned the problem b4 but I never realized it was so serious. We have always kept our cats indoors.

This afternoon I began to wonder if it was a tumor. Then I got very scared and cried.
