Let's see, because you were conscious of and concerned about your imagined racist appearance, you didn't act the way you truly felt inside - a good example of why we should not rely on outer appearance (demeanor) to gauge what is inside another. You had good reasons to be concerned and take precautions - inner city, high crime area, teenager, "rough looking" - and none of these things had anything to do with the purse-snatcher's "demeanor".
