Why, barring a real scandal, George W. will be president: I will not lie, it is mainly because people regret having turned his father out of office, and they would like to cure the wrong turn down the corridors of history. Most people know that Clinton hasn't had much to do with the economy, and that he has had few initiatives in other areas, but has mainly acted to modify or veto actions of the Republican Congress. Many of them know that we were already coming out of the recession when the '92 election occurred, and that Reagan's economic policies set the stage for the '90s. Despite the unwillingness to endure instability by getting rid of Clinton, most people blame him for the scandals that have been endured, and the more things settle down, the more loathe they are to elect a member of his administration. That is why Gore is so desperately trying to distance himself, although it is not working so well. People also worry over the damage done to foreign policy, although they are mainly "doubtful" rather than critical. As long as George W. appears to be an apple that has not fallen far from the tree, they want the Reagan/Bush years back, and he is their best chance to get them....For these reasons, and supposing that he can afford to stay in, I believe that Dan Quayle will be the primary beneficiary if Bush is knocked out of the race...
