Alexa--

Hmm? Bitches can be craftier (perhaps not surprising). But I've owned several dogs over the years and none was ever the slightest problem. Bitches may also be more possessive and protective of those they love, and that's a problem.

Don't think it matters whether kids spent the same proportion of their lives at home then than they do now: they didn't develop any faster (if anything, the onset of puberty was later). As I said in my second post, the extended family wasn't all that it's cracked up to be. And, in the working and lower classes large numbers of people didn't bother actually to marry; they cohabited, had kids, maybe split, maybe didn't. This annoyed the Church, but there wasn't much they could do about it.

I certainly wouldn't blame my mother for the way she raised me; I consider my childhood to have been a pretty happy one most of the time. But her attentions were at times exaggerated (the more so as I was an only child), and, especially as I got older, I found them oppressive. Just a little benign neglect would have been appreciated. (Used to love it when I got home from school and nobody was there.)
