Doug : I'm not sure that the governments want gold to disappear. In fact, I don't see how they can. They are too heavily invested in it. Gold is undoubtedly not the prime reserve currency it once was but it still has a real value and is no-one's debt. In my opinion Bob has put his finger on the fundamental problem --- besides the strength of the US dollar, there is just too much mining production weighing on the price.

What is actually required, and this is what Bobby Godsell of Anglogold and the SAf Minister of Finance have been preaching about, is an open or "transparent" market. Or even a "two tier" market where the second tier is for the central banks to deal amongst themselves. While the CBs can sell to the speculators one will always be suspicious of "foul play".
