re java+WAP standard, i believe there is sentiment that java is too big for wireless
this has been expressed to me by the hdml people and people at RIMM
i guess my question was based around hdml (developed by Unwired Planet) and the awkward sending back and forth of full pages unlike other methodolgies, such as used by PMCS
'java or other options' in my original question assumed this, and perhaps the opportunity of SUN to 'java label' another 'language' or to extend their brand
while this may seem like pure fantasy, there are significant cost implications (savings)in the java camp and the ability for developers to program java for multiple platforms
the issue with hdml (other than bandwidth)is the time at which developers can get up to speed
for large organizations with significant investments in C, C++, Java and the Microsoft languages to go hdml would be challenging
the standards war, the methodology war and international issues are another (SUNW, MSFT, PMCS, etc...)
it is my belief that the Europeans (including Scandanavian countries) will build their own standard, Symbian being the early banner carrier
distribution and support concerns are another reason why hdml may (or may not) have competition
the telco's will sign agreements with everybody (PHCM, SUNW, PMCS, SYMBIAN) as they are value providers...i almost forgot MSFT :)
while all of this won't impact PHCM's stock price this coming week or possibly next month (up or down), it is worth consideration
redherring, interesting to track, buy they kowtow to the VC's, that is what guarantees their readership and their conferences ($$$), imho
