[Any time an animal looses hair from an area it's serious and some of the causes can spread to people.]

Thank you so much, Bill. I had no idea. I sit here crying with relief that M didn't die. I feel so sad because I didn't recognize the seriousness of the situation. I feel so badly that Mephisto suffered so much for about a week.

The abscess opened sometime in the night. Housemate woke me up around 6AM. I called the animal hopsital and they told us to phone back when the docs came in. The people on the phone are good, very calm, much calmer and clearer than the people you hear on 911 emergencies when those emergencies are televised.

The person who answered the phone understood what was happening to M. She told me that it was a good thing the abscess opened. If it had not, the docs would have had to open it.

We took him in at 9AM. The cut is very deep and very long. At first, we thought M might have had a fight with a raccoon or even a squirrel. M's temperature was 103.The doc and assistant shaved the area, cleaned the wound, applied topical medication, gave him and antibiotic and checked the bacteria. Doc believes it was a cat fight because of the type of bacteria.

Doc prescribed Amoxcillin, 100 mg, twice a day for a week. We have to put warm compresses on the wound twice a day. They leave the wound open. The warm compresses should help alleviate the pus. The doc said there are a couple of deep pockets of pus in there still.

She said Mephisto licked his fir until the wound was exposed. So that is why he had the bald spot.

I wish I had told you about it earlier.
