from a norton systemworks email bulletin...
"HARD DRIVE FAILURE EARLY WARNING Would you like to be alerted before a hard drive fails? Add the SMART sensor to Norton System Doctor.
This sensor works only with newer IDE drives that have Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART) built in. However, SMART can predict most drive hardware failures before they occur, giving you the chance to back up your files and replace the drive before data is lost.
To add this sensor to System Doctor, right-click anywhere on System Doctor and select Add Sensor, then Disks, then Disk SMART Status. The sensor will be added to the panel.
This sensor periodically scans SMART disks for things like file allocation table errors, cross-linked files, and lost clusters. A red light means that significant problems exist, a yellow light means only lost clusters are detected, and a green light means no problems have been detected.
SMART can alert you or automatically run Norton Disk Doctor if problems are detected."
[note: i had to call dell to see if my drives had 'smart' built in. i was guessing probably not, in that my machines are almost 3 years old. well, what a nice surprise! the dell tech checked my specs and said i had 'smart' technology. so now i'll add the sensor to system doctor.]
