Nokia Announces Content-Rich WAP Smart Phone

February 23, 1999 -- Nokia has today announced its Nokia 7110, a GSM phone based on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). This dual band GSM 900/1800 phone was introduced at the GSM World Congress in Cannes, France.

The Nokia 7110 has a large graphics display and a number of unique new features and will be available in volume in the second quarter of 1999. Nokia will also introduce similar products for the TDMA and GSM 1900 standards later this year.

The phone is specifically designed to accept value-added content services, such as those announced at the same time by CNN and Reuters.

The display of the Nokia 7110 is almost 80 percent larger than that of the popular Nokia 6110, yet the overall dimensions of the Nokia 7110 are smaller.

Nokia claimed that it put a lot of effort into optimizing the phone for reading and entering text. The display allows for viewing different font sizes and styles. Entering text is enhanced by the predictive text input method and the phone has a built-in dictionary, which assists in quickly picking up the right word. In addition to the standard vocabulary, the Nokia 7110 can also continuously learn new words from the user.

Gearing up for sales in the Far East, the Nokia 7110 enables Chinese input from the phone keypad, using either Pinyin, Zhuyin or 5-stroke input when writing names, addresses, short messages or calendar notes. The Chinese version of the Nokia 7110 has over 9000 Chinese words in its vocabulary.

Nokia's Navi Roller feature enables users to scroll the menus and the phonebook functions. The selection in the menu is then made by clicking the Nokia Navi„ Roller. The roller can also be used for text input.

The memory of the Nokia 7110 can store up to 1000 names in the phonebook, with up to five phone or fax numbers and two addresses for each contact. Different icons can be used for marking the home or office phone, fax number or email address. Up to 500 short messages can be stored on the phone in user-defined folders. The calendar of the Nokia 7110 can be viewed either by day, week or month, and up to 660 calendar notes can be stored. The calendar can also easily be synchronized with the most common PC calendars.

The Nokia 7110 supports 34 languages and has 35 ringing tones. It supports all three wireless voice codecs: Half Rate, Full Rate and Enhanced Full Rate.

WAP, Nokia Win Big in France

February 25, 1999 -- Nokia will supply France Telecom with an end to end wireless solution that complies with the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), which will lead to new services such as Internet and intranet access for GSM mobile phones.

This is not just a big win for Nokia, but also for the WAP standard, a standardized way of transmitting IP-based data over digital wireless systems. Nokia said these services will begin to be available in the first half of 1999.

Nokia will provide both the infrastructure platform and mobile phones to France Telecom. The infrastructure includes network elements from the Nokia IP group of products such as the its IP440 and VPN200 firewall routers and the Artus Messaging Platform. The mobile handset will be the recently-announced WAP-compliant Nokia 7110 dual band GSM phone, which is designed to access text information from the Internet.

"We are starting the real convergence with mobile phones and the Internet," said Didier Quillot, Commercial Director of France Telecom Mobiles.

The announcement follows on the heels of other announcements at the GSM World Congress this week about both hardware and content available to WAP-compliant GSM phones.

Both CNN and Reuters announced they would provide content for such devices.
